This picture shows one of the older buildings in Great Witley. It used
to be the local bakery up until the mid 1970's, it's now (as is par for
the course) residential..
In front of this building against the road side used to sit the old toll/round house. It was built to levy a tax on road users but was destroyed in 1939 as part of a road widening scheme. It became unused when the county councils took over the upkeep of roads/highways in 1888. You can just see the top of Abberley Clock Tower in the back ground, top centre. The sign shows the turning to Bromyard which goes via Stanford Bridge
and High House cross road. Tourist (brown) sign shows directions to Stanford
Bridge caravan/camp site, which is on the side of the river Teme on the
grouunds of the Bridge public house. |
